More than ever UK and US investors are collaborating on market reform to build a more secure financial future. All eyes are on the next step of market reform here in the UK with the publication of the Walker Report. Early hints are that shareholders will be 'strongly urged' to become real owners and not mere lessee's of quoted companies - especially the banks. It will probably fall short of any form of compulsion but possibly a close shot across the bows.
Why does this matter to US investors? Well we know for a fact that there is a lot of 2-way traffice between regulatory agencies these days so we might posisbly hope for a race to the top for a change? We also have a Shareholder Rights Directive from the EU being translated into local law as of this October, it sets a framework for global markets to aspire to by putting the shareholder front and centre, especially on the proxy voting front. It's been a five year long haul but it will be well worth the effort.
